Prairie Engineering’s team has been bringing buildings to life since 1983. We now have an opportunity for an Electrical Engineer or Designer to join our Bismarck team.
A little about us:
Prairie Engineering, P.C. was founded on May 1, 1983. It consisted of mechanical and electrical engineering services in Bismarck and Minot, North Dakota. Since that time, the company has expanded to over 20 employees and recently added structural consulting engineering services. Our primary service area is the western two-thirds of North Dakota, eastern Montana, and northwest section of South Dakota. We are not just limited to those areas; we have also had projects in Minnesota and several other southern and western states.
Our team design mechanical and electrical system for many types of buildings including office buildings, airports terminals, municipal buildings, hospitals, detention facilities, schools, commercial and industrial facilities.
Position Responsibilities
Our engineers and designers work closely with each project’s owner, architect, other engineering disciplines, and contractors to custom design systems that meet the client’s needs. They are responsible for their projects from the concept phase to providing support during the building’s operation phase.
- Ability to initiate, develop and maintain mutually beneficial client relationships.
- Apply electrical engineering, codes, and standards knowledge to solve complex construction problems.
- Attend kick-off, coordination, and progress meetings.
- Coordinate project ideas, design, conflicts, etc. with all engineering disciplines, contractors, project managers, and clients.
- Utilize AutoCAD to draft electrical construction drawings, including floor plans, site plans, equipment details and wiring diagrams.
- Coordinate with other engineering trades, including architectural, mechanical, structural, and civil to ensure a complete and comprehensive electrical design.
- Perform field visits/inspections during design and construction phases.
- Perform quality control and quality assurance techniques to ensure design meets current codes and standards. This includes NEC, energy and NFPA codes and specifications are implemented.
- Prepare electrical construction drawings, technical reports, and specifications.
- Work toward keeping current tasks within schedule and budget to fit the needs of the project.
- Willingness to travel and work out of town.
- Provide data, as required, for cost estimating and secure preliminary equipment costs for review.
- Review shop drawing documentation for compliance with project specifications.
- Maintain and utilize working knowledge of accepted electrical engineering and instrumentation/control design standards and practices in the execution of design work that will meet the clients’ needs and conform to company standards.
- Participate in preparation of bid documents for all required projects.

Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Ability to work well under pressure with constant variations in priority and tasks.
- Proven ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and organization.
- Proven ability to be detail oriented and an independent thinker.
- Proven ability to maintain excellent integrity and ethical standards within role.
- Ability to work outside normal business hours as project deadlines and schedules require.
- Willingness to work with all levels of internal staff, as well as outside clients and vendors, in order to develop a full understanding of building systems and their operation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities, as well as demonstrated high quality technical writing skills and proficiency in English.
Desirable Qualifications
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products.
- Experience with using AutoCAD and/or Revit.
- Experience with electrical installations.
- Knowledgeable in the National Electric Code.
